Regulations when Shipping Lithium Batteries from 2026

FROM 1st JANUARY 2026
The below regulation will apply when shipping lithium batteries. This will not/cannot be monitored but will be done on a trust basis, but can all customers state that the batteries are in a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity.
SECTION I
Lithium-ion cells and batteries must be offered for transport at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity. This becomes a mandatory requirement on 1 January 2026. Cells and/or batteries at a state of charge greater than 30% of their rated capacity may only be shipped with the approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator under the written conditions established by those authorities.
SECTION II
Lithium-ion cells and batteries with a Watt-hour rating in excess of 2.7 Wh must be offered for transport at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity. This becomes a mandatory requirement on 1 January 2026. Cells and/or batteries at a state of charge greater than 30% of their rated capacity must be offered for transport in accordance with the provisions of Section I of PI 966 with the approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator under the written conditions established by those authorities.
